125 years of Miele - The milestones
1899 On 1st July 1899, the technician Carl Miele and the businessman Reinhard
Zinkann found the company Miele & Cie. OHG in Herzebrock, which is later
converted into a limited commercial partnership (Miele & Cie. KG). In a former
grain mill, the production of cream separators begins with 11 employees, 4
lathes and 1 drilling machine. One year later, the first butter churns are added,
consisting of a small oak vat with agitator.
1901 The first Miele washing machine in Europe comes onto the market. The
principle is similar to that of butter churns, with a (larger) wooden tub and a
turnstile inside, which is initially moved by a lever.
1907 Miele moves to its current headquarters in Gütersloh, now with 60 employees,
where a larger plot of land with a railway siding can be acquired. A foundry is
built - and the first sales office is opened in Darmstadt.
1909 The Miele company health insurance fund is founded.
1914 In addition to hand-operated washing machines, the first electric and water-
powered models are built. The first drum washing machines and laundry
centrifuges for laundries follow in 1924. Cars are even produced from 1912 –
but this is abandoned in 1914 due to the anticipated capital requirements.
1916 Miele opens its second plant in the neighbouring town of Bielefeld and produces
its first electric motors here, among other things. Bicycles follow from 2024,
vacuum cleaners from 1927 and motorised bicycles from 1931.
1926 Miele builds milking machines.
1929 Miele presents Europe's first electric dishwasher for domestic use.

1931 The first sales company outside Germany is founded in Switzerland.
1937 Even before the death of the two founders in 1938 and 1939, their sons Carl
Miele junior and Kurt Christian Zinkann join the company management,
supported by their younger brothers Heinrich Miele and Erich Zinkann. It is up to

- Page 2: Miele gradually switched production to different types of ammunition during the Second World War, involving the use of forced labor. The reconstruction of the factories after the war and the return to civilian production were responsibilities of the second generation. The company's role from 1933 to 1945 has been scientifically analyzed and published as a book since 2023. In 1951, Miele built its third plant in Euskirchen near Cologne, originally to produce dynamos for bicycles. Drives, blowers, pumps, and cable drums from Euskirchen contribute to the longevity and performance of various household appliances. In 1954, Rudolf Miele and Dr. Peter Zinkann joined the company, taking on formative roles supported by their cousins. The first fully automatic washing machines developed by Miele were produced in 1958, followed by the first tumble dryers. In 1960, the Bielefeld plant built the first fully automatic dishwasher, discontinuing bicycle and motorbike production. Miele started production of irons and small-format washing machines in Bürmoos in 1962, marking its first production outside Germany. The fifth plant opened in Lehrte in 1965, primarily manufacturing machines for commercial laundries and the agricultural sector.
- Page 3: In 1975, the sixth plant begins production of kitchen furniture and plastic parts. In 1980, the first Miele sales company outside Europe is founded in Australia, followed by South Africa and the USA. Miele gradually opens up its European neighbours and, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Eastern European markets are added. In 1987, the Cordes company is taken over and becomes the competence centre for cookers and ovens. Miele revolutionises dishwashing with the invention of the cutlery drawer above the top rack. The Miele company museum opens and becomes one of the most popular company museums in Germany. In 1989, Miele acquires the family-owned company Imperial, a pioneer of steam cooking in the home. Imperial is known for the glass ceramic hob and produces large-scale cooking systems for restaurants. Bünde focuses on hobs and steam cookers, while Arnsberg specializes in cooker hoods. Miele is represented in 49 countries by its own sales companies and in many others by local importers.
- Page 4: The milking machine product range was sold at the end of the 1980s, marking a final withdrawal from the agricultural products sector. In 1995, Miele appointed the first family-independent Executive Directors to manage the company. The management model consists of an Executive Board with representatives from owner families and non-family Executive Directors. In 1996, Miele published its first environmental report documenting measures in environmental protection. The environmental report was replaced by a sustainability report in 2002, published every two years. Miele was certified according to the social standard SA 8000 in 2008 to improve working conditions. Miele received the German Sustainability Award in 2014 and 2024. In 2002, Miele began producing vacuum cleaners outside Europe in Dongguan, China. By 2009, Miele took over the joint company completely, with a third of its vacuum cleaners produced in Dongguan. In 1998, Miele introduced InfoControl, a networking application for domestic appliances, pioneering the concept of 'intelligent living'.
- Page 5: Controlled cooker hood, the connection of networked Miele appliances to the photovoltaic system on the roof, mobile appliance control via app, voice control, and AI-based cooking assistants are part of Miele@home applications. In 1999, the second generational change begins with Dr. Reinhard Zinkann appointed to the Miele Group Executive Board. Dr. Markus Miele joins the family business in mid-2002, two years before Rudolf Miele's passing in August 2004. In 2001, Miele sets new standards in gentle laundry care with the patented honeycomb drum. The honeycomb drum allows delicate textiles to glide gently, helping them last longer. In 2004, a new Miele plant in Uničov, Czech Republic, begins producing washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers. In 2005, Miele sells the production of kitchen furniture to strengthen its appliance business. The sale allows continued use of the ‘Miele The Kitchen’ brand by the purchaser for five years. In 2009, Miele builds its second electronics plant in Braşov, Romania, to supplement electronics production capacity. The new plant is intended as a quality assurance measure and will initially produce simpler electronics.
- Page 6: Miele has an excellent reputation for cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment and laboratory technology. Miele is launching large-capacity sterilisers from its plant in Bürmoos, making it a full-service provider for all reprocessing stages. Medical technology at Miele is part of the Professional business unit, established 100 years ago with the first commercial washing machines. Miele acquires 75.1% of the shares in the Italian medical technology specialist Steelco Group, strengthening its hospital project business. Miele presents its revolutionary Dialog Oven, which uses electromagnetic waves for an even cooking process. Miele Venture Capital GmbH focuses on tapping into good ideas from outside, in addition to in-house expertise and innovations. The new subsidiary seeks creative solutions that align with the Group's products, services, and manufacturing processes. Cooperations range from development projects to direct equity participation. The company's own day-care centre ‘IdeenReich’ opens opposite the main plant in Gütersloh. The educational concept is aimed at supporting employees and their families.
- Page 7: Awakening children's interest in technical and scientific contexts is a focus of the company. The daycare centre offers childcare until 6 p.m. on weekdays all year round. In 2019, Miele replaces traditional pillars of technology, marketing, and administration with a matrix structure. This new structure consists of central functions, sales regions, and eight new business units with operational responsibility. To expand digital expertise, IT and Smart Home areas will be significantly increased, with a new location in Amsterdam for digital marketing and sales. Miele launches a second washing machine plant in Ksawerów, Poland, producing a new entry-level series. In 2023, Miele announces plans to build its 16th plant in Alabama to manufacture large-volume ranges and ovens for North America. Production in Alabama is scheduled to start at the end of 2024. In the summer of 2024, Miele celebrates 125 years of quality and innovation. The goal is to return to growth amid significant global challenges, including the pandemic and economic consequences of the war in Ukraine.
- Page 8: Miele has committed to investing a total of €500 million by the end of 2028. The Miele Group achieved a turnover of €4.96 billion in the last financial year. Eight of the 15 factories are located in Germany. Further locations are in Austria, China, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Poland. A new site in the USA will be the 16th plant, starting production at the end of 2024. A joint venture has been established with Metall Zug AG to strengthen Miele's medical technology business. Miele is represented by its own sales and service companies in 49 countries. The Executive Board of the Miele Group consists of six members with various responsibilities. Miele has more than 200 own brand stores worldwide. The company has a history of making difficult decisions in challenging times over the past 125 years.
